Why

For many years I had thoughts of building an aerodynamic fuel efficient vehicle to get me back and forth to work on my nearly thirty mile trip each way. Then a friend pointed me in the direction of a little two seater car promising 84 mpg and a base price of around $7,500. “Someone else has done it for me!” I thought. I will just buy that one, and I began watching and waiting. As the production date got pushed back time and time again I looked and found another company.

My new find was a super aerodynamic futuristic looking electric vehicle designed to run off the power of the Sun. I watched and waited to be able to buy one. But yet, there was something off, this new car seemed familiar, I had seen it before, a long time ago, like more than 10 years ago….

As of the writing of this, neither vehicle has materialized.

During my wait, I purchased a new truck. Something I could modify and really make my own. I planned to add some hydraulics and make the bed a dump bed. After I had it for a little while I slid up under the back it to see what parts I needed. Plastic boxes, wires and sensors stuck all over! I knew the engine bay was packed with all kinds of gizmos and wizardry I would have a hard time working on, but all up under the bed? I was not happy. I wanted something I could work on.

As a hobby machinist and inventor most of my spare time and efforts have gone towards a device I designed and received two patents for in the wireless communications industry. My father was a brilliant electronics technician. My grandfather was a self taught mechanical engineer. Together along with my relatives and a partnership with another family they invented and manufactured some of the first commercial bottle washers in the United States. Inventing, refining and manufacturing runs deep in my core.

There is a coworker that occasionally rattles my cage a bit for fun as we have both been watching and waiting on these two vehicles to come to production. He would say something like “ Do you think you could build a car for 20 million dollars?” and that was usually followed by me flopping back in my desk chair and trying to pull my hair out. I would respond by going off on a rant about how there are multiple car companies that assemble or build their cars by hand! They produce and sell only small numbers of vehicles, but do you know what? They are in production, and people who want their vehicles can actually buy them. They didn’t need a giant factory to do it.

So that brings us where we are today. The last time we joked about it, that was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. It was at that point I decided I’ve had it, I’m building a car. I know there are at least between 20 and 60 thousand other people out there who share my want for a small energy efficient vehicle. I’m sure there are a good number of you who have probably been thinking “I’ve had it, I want to build a car!” as well. It just happens that my camel got the last straw first. I hope that you will choose to join me on this endeavor and together we can produce something that we have all been waiting a very long time for.
